How to express identity and reflexivity in Arabic

One of the most important words to know and use is نفس (nafs), which means “self” or “same”. It is used to express identity, sameness, or reflexivity.

The word ذاتي (dhati) means “self / intrinsic”. It is used to describe self-related, inner, personal, or intrinsic qualities. You’ll most often find it in abstract, academic, or formal contexts.

Let’s look at some examples:

Finally, we have أيّ / أيّة (‘ayya / ‘ayy), which mean “any / whichever”. They must match the gender of the noun:

  • أيّ → used with masculine nouns

  • أيّة → used with feminine nouns

Masculine Use (أيّ + masculine noun)

  • لأيّ سببٍ — for any reason

  • من أيّ كتابٍ — from any book

Feminine Use (أيّة + feminine noun)

  • لأيّة لحظةٍ — at any moment

  • في أيّة دولةٍ — in any country

Independent Use

When أيّ is used as an independent noun, it means:

  • anyone

  • anything

  • whatever
