Form 2 in Arabic

Form 2 verbs are augmented versions of Form 1 verbs, and can be easily recognised by the doubling of the middle consonant.

Their pattern is: فَعَّلَ – يُفَعِّلُ

The second consonant is doubled in both the past and the present forms.

By doing this, the verb’s meaning becomes intensified, causative, or factitive, expanding on the basic meaning of the Form 1 root.

The verbal noun pattern for Form 2 verbs is: تَفْعِيل or sometimes تَفْعِلَة.

The active participle pattern is: مُفَعِّل

The passive participle pattern is: مُفَعَّل

As you can see, only a small vowel change distinguishes the active participle from the passive participle.
